Suomenlinna Island near Helsinki Finland

A twenty minute ferry ride takes you from Helsinki to Suomenlinna Island, it's a wonderful place to spend a few hours or an entire day as I did. The island has a huge sea fortress which was begun by the Swedes in 1748. I enjoyed walking around exploring the island and I also did some birding...It was one of my favorite places on the trip.

  2. I had not heard of Suomenlinna until you mentioned it. How do you pronounce it, anyways?

Looks like a great place for those who appreciate nature.. very green & diverse.

Is there no motorized vehicle traffic once off the ferry and on the island? THAT would be refreshing!

I just Googled Suomenlinna online and learned the name means "Castle of Finland" and that there is a submarine there! And a brewery! Did you visit either??

Also learned that the island earth is very fertile due to the old buildings leaching lime into the soil. Makes sense.

Good job on your photos, enjoyed them!
